Fifteen years of hot mix on this island and I still slow down when I pass a driveway with clean edges. I'm an asphalt paver working out of Honolulu, and the crew runs from Hawaii Kai through Aiea and Pearl City out to Kapolei, and over the Pali to Kailua and Kaneohe.

You know the driveway I mean. Gray as old lava rock, alligator cracking by the garage door, a seam near the curb where the trade winds planted something green. We take that up and leave one dark, quiet sheet. My guys still argue over who gets to run the roller.
The smallest job I'll take is a pothole and a patch by the apron. The largest is a full commercial lot, tear-out to final stripe. In between it's overlays, crack sealing, seal coating, base repair, catch basin work and ADA stalls.
We compact the base in lifts and check it before any mix touches the ground, because our red dirt plus a week of Kona rain will find a soft spot every single time. Skip that and you get birdbaths by the second winter. I'd rather lose the job than pave over a base I don't trust.
