Ruts where the tires sit, a soft patch by the gate, loose gravel underfoot every morning.
Driveway paving is the least glamorous thing you will ever spend money on, and the only one you feel every single day when you pull in.
We're a paving company, and my crews lay driveways and small lots from town out to the windward side. Plenty of driveway companies will price your job off a satellite photo. I would rather stand on it. Size, how far the old surface has gone, and whether we can walk a roller behind the house all change what the work takes.
One thing I refuse to do is lay a fresh mat over a soft spot that pumps water after a Manoa downpour, because the dip comes back up through the new surface within a season and you have paid twice.
Below: how we build it, what it runs, when driveway resurfacing is the smarter call, and what folks ask us first. Ring (808) 808-9481 and I will come look at it.

Reseal Blacktop Driveway
When we reseal a blacktop driveway, the sealer is the last part of the job and the scrubbing is most of it. We blow it clean, wire-brush the crusted dirt off the edges, degrease the oil drips so the coat bonds instead of lifting off in a saucer shape, and fill the cracks before anything black goes down.
Then two thin coats, hand-squeegeed along the garage lip and the borders, sprayed through the middle, with sand in the mix if you have a slope. Foot traffic that afternoon.
What I won't do is spread sealer over a surface that's gone crumbly and web-cracked all over, because that needs a new mat, not makeup. Size, access, how many cracks need filling first and how much oil has soaked in are what set the day. Our asphalt paving company keeps sealer moving all year, though we don't start with rain coming in, and plenty of sealing driveway companies skip the degreaser entirely.
Asphalt Driveway Repair
Asphalt driveway repair is the middle ground, and most of the drives I look at are candidates for it: the slab is sound, but there's a pothole by the gate, a soft spot where water stands after a hard rain, and a stretch near the street breaking down into loose gravel. We saw those areas out square and full depth, patch with hot mix, and roll it tight.
What I won't do is trowel new material over a hole with a broken edge under it. That patch lifts out inside a season and takes a bigger bite of the drive with it.
Plenty of asphalt driveway contractors will quote a full repave when four clean cut-outs would hold for years. How deep the failure runs, how much of it there is, and whether a truck can get past your gate all change the number.
Driveway Resurfacing
Driveway resurfacing is what I'll push you toward when the top has worn out but the ground under it is still sound: we grind down the edges so the new layer sits flush with your garage slab and the street, sweep it clean, spray a tack coat, then lay a fresh lift of hot mix and roll it before it cools.
Skip that tack coat and the new surface peels away in sheets like a bumper sticker, which is most of what I get called out to fix behind other driveway paving companies here.
What I won't do is put two inches of new mix over a patch that flexes when you step on it. That gets cut out and handled as asphalt driveway repair first, or the same cracks walk right back up through your new surface.
Size, truck and roller access, how much patching the old top needs, and how thick we go are what set the number.
What the job involves
Driveway paving starts with demolition. We saw out the old surface, haul it off, and get a look at what's underneath, because a soft spot down there will telegraph up through new pavement inside a season of heavy rain. Then we grade, bring in crushed rock, roll it tight, and lay hot mix in two lifts, binder first and the wearing course over it, so the surface knits together instead of sitting on top like a lid.
Edges get hand-worked where the drive meets the garage slab and the sidewalk.
What I won't do is pave over ground that hasn't been made to drain. Water finds the low spot on the H-1 shoulder and it'll find yours.
Size, truck access, how much old material comes out and the shape the ground is in set the price. The paving itself is finished in a day.
What it costs
What it costs comes down to size first, then everything size doesn't tell you. A flat rectangular pad off a level street prices differently than a narrow lane up Palolo where the truck can't turn and we're moving hot mix by hand.
After that it's depth, how much of the old surface has to come out and get hauled off, whether the ground underneath has gone soft, and whether we're regrading so water runs off instead of parking against your garage. Driveway resurfacing over a sound base sits well below a full tear-out, and that's a judgment I make standing on it, not from a satellite photo the way some driveway paving companies quote.
What I won't do is lay a thin mat over mush to keep the number friendly. Give me a ring at (808) 808-9481 and I will walk it with you.
When driveway paving is the wrong fix
Driveway paving is the wrong fix more often than people expect, and I will talk you out of it before I pave over a problem. If the top has worn thin but the base under it is still sound, a full tear-out is money spent for no reason, and Asphalt Resurfacing puts a fresh wearing course over what you already have. Thin cracks with no dip around them?
Crack Filling during the dry stretch keeps water out of the base and buys you years. If your slab already sits high against the garage and water runs toward the house, new pavement on top makes that worse, so the grade gets cut down with Asphalt Milling first. And if you want stamped or colored concrete driveways, that is work for cement driveway contractors. Our Driveways are asphalt.
Why choose us for this
You have a driveway that has gone bad and you want to deal with it once, not stand over somebody with a coffee making sure they finish. Most folks who call me about driveway paving have already been through it: a number on the phone that grew on the invoice, a crew that vanished onto a bigger job halfway through, and a pile of millings left by the mailbox.
The thing I will not do on your job is lay hot mix straight over soft ground to save half a morning. That looks fine on day one and dips under the first delivery truck. Where a cheaper quote comes in lower, it is usually the depth and the grading that got left off the sheet, and you find that out in year two.
Coming out to look and price it costs you nothing, and it books you into nothing.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a blacktop driveway?
Driveway paving is priced by the square foot, and what moves that number is size, access, and how much of the old surface has to come out. A gate too narrow for the truck means hand work. So does soft ground that needs rebuilding before anything gets laid. The cost to replace a blacktop driveway also climbs if the slab is carrying a work van rather than a sedan, because that needs a thicker mat.
Should I go with asphalt or a concrete driveway?
Asphalt, if you want it back in use fast and patchable later. Concrete driveways make sense when you want decades out of it and can live with the cure time. Blacktop flexes and takes a repair cleanly; concrete cracks in straight lines and the fix always shows. Some driveway paving contractors only push one because it's the only crew they've got. We run both, and I'll tell you which your ground suits.
Contact Honolulu Paving Co now
Contact us now and you're dealing with asphalt paving contractors who live and work in Honolulu, not a scheduler three time zones away. When you call (808) 808-9481, tell me roughly how long and wide the drive is, and whether a truck can back up to it, because tight lanes and low branches decide the machine before anything else does. Somebody's here through the week, nine to five, and a message left after that gets a call back.
Then I come out, walk the driveway with you, and say plainly whether an overlay works or the whole thing needs lifting. One thing I flat refuse to do is lay hot mix over ground still soft from a couple of wet days, because it prints tire marks and settles into dips inside the year. We pour concrete driveways as well, so comparing the two is easy.
