Faded gray asphalt, cracks spidering out from the tire tracks, loose grit rolling under your shoes.
Nobody on this island has ever called a neighbor over to admire a driveway. A mango tree that finally fruited, sure.
Asphalt resurfacing is most of what my crew does, on home driveways in Kaimuki and on any asphalt lot where delivery trucks have worn two dark ruts by the door. There are plenty of asphalt resurfacing contractors here. The difference is what happens before the new layer goes down.
What I refuse to do is float fresh mix over a soft spot and let you discover it in the second rainy season, when water gets under it and the patch alligators. Bad ground comes out first. Size and the state of what's underneath move the price more than anything else.
Below is how the work actually goes, when resurfacing a driveway is the wrong call, and the questions folks ask before they book. Ring me at (808) 808-9481 and I can come take a look at it.

Repaving Asphalt Driveway
Repaving asphalt driveway work, done right, starts with what's holding the old mat up rather than what it looks like on top. If the base is sound, driveway repaving means cutting a keyway at the garage lip and along the street edge, tack coating the whole surface so the new hot mix actually bonds, then rolling it while it's still hot enough to take the weight.
Skip the tack and the new layer peels off in sheets the first time a delivery truck cranks its wheel on it. Skip the keyway and your grade climbs above the garage floor, so the next real downpour runs inside instead of down the apron.
Size, access for the roller, and how much soft ground we cut out are what move the number on a resurfacing driveway job. Our local asphalt paving service probes the base before quoting, because plenty of asphalt resurfacing contractors never do.
Asphalt Overlay
An asphalt overlay is a fresh layer of hot mix, usually an inch and a half to two inches, bonded down over the pavement you already own. We mill a shallow lip at the garage apron and where the drive meets the street first, so the new mat ties in flush instead of leaving a ridge your bumper finds every evening. Then the old surface gets swept and tacked.
Miss the tack coat and the overlay asphalt shears loose under a turning tire inside a year, usually right at the top of the slope.
We hand rake the edges and roll while the mix is still hot, keeping the fall running toward the street so the wet season has somewhere to send water.
What moves an overlay is square footage, mat thickness, how much milling the tie-ins need, and whether the paver can get in without hand work.
Crushed Asphalt Driveway
A crushed asphalt driveway is recycled pavement, milled off an old road, spread over a graded base and rolled while it's warm. Out past Waimanalo and up the Kunia side, where a drive can run a couple hundred feet to the house, it's often the sensible call. The sun does half the work for us.
Leftover binder in the millings softens in the heat and knits the material together, so it tightens up over the first few weeks of driving on it. We lay it in lifts of about two inches and roll each one. Material dumped loose and left for your tires to sort out never binds, and you get ruts and gravel washing toward the road every time it pours.
It won't take sealer, so this isn't a surface for asphalt sealcoating contractors, and it needs a timber or concrete edge to hold the sides in.
What the job involves
Asphalt resurfacing starts with the part nobody ever sees. We sweep and wash the surface down, dig out the soft spots where the base has given up, then mill the edges at the garage apron and where the drive meets the street, so the new layer ties in flush instead of leaving a lip your bumper finds every morning. Cracks get cleaned out and filled.
Then a tack coat goes on, sticky as day-old poi, so the overlay asphalt bonds to what's under it rather than sitting on top like a lid.
Hot mix comes off the truck, gets raked to grade so water runs to the street instead of pooling at your door, and gets rolled while it's still hot enough to move. Roll it late and you get a loose, sandy top that ravels out in the first hard trade wind rain.
What it costs
Asphalt resurfacing cost isn't one number, and anybody handing you one over the phone without asking a question is guessing. Square footage sets the floor. After that it's access, since a paver we have to hand-feed down a narrow lane eats more hours than an open asphalt lot a dump truck can back straight onto.
Then condition: soft spots get cut out and rebuilt before we overlay asphalt, because a fresh mat laid over a failed base cracks in the same places within a season. Mat thickness, milling at the garage lip, edge work, hauling grindings off, wet season scheduling, all of it moves the figure. Concrete driveway resurfacing prices out differently again, so tell me which surface you've got.
Ring me at (808) 808-9481 with rough dimensions and I can get you close, then firm it up once I have walked it.
When asphalt resurfacing is the wrong fix
Asphalt resurfacing is the wrong call when the base under the drive has given up. Lay a fresh layer over soft ground and the ground keeps moving, so the same alligator cracking comes back through the new top and you've paid for a lid. That's dig-out and rebuild work, and it's Asphalt Repair you want, not an overlay.
Two or three hairline cracks on an otherwise solid asphalt lot? That's Crack Filling, and I'd rather tell you so than sell you a whole surface.
If the drive already sits high against the garage slab, adding asphalt overlay just pushes water at the house. We take the top off first, which is Asphalt Milling.
And if you're standing on a slab, no asphalt helps. Concrete Driveways want concrete driveway resurfacing or replacement.
Why choose us for this
You've got a lot or a driveway that's failed, and what you want from asphalt resurfacing is to hire somebody once and then stop thinking about it for years. Not to stand out there supervising. Not to get a number on the phone that grows by the time the invoice lands.
Where a cheap quote usually gets cheap is the prep. No milling at the garage lip, no tack coat, no digging out the soft spots first, just hot mix laid straight over the old surface like a coat of paint. That mat lets go at the apron the first wet season, and then you're paying twice.
What I won't do on this kind of work is pave over a spongy area. If the base moves under a boot, it comes out before anything new goes down.
The estimate is free and it doesn't sign you up for anything. Size, access, and how much patching the surface needs are what move the number.
Frequently asked questions
Is asphalt resurfacing the same as sealcoating?
No. Asphalt resurfacing means we clean, patch and level the old surface, then lay a fresh mat of hot asphalt over the top, usually an inch and a half to two inches. Sealcoat is a thin liquid coat that protects a surface still in decent shape. If you're phoning asphalt sealcoating contractors about a driveway with ruts and alligator cracking, all you'll get is a fresh black color over the same trouble.
Will the old cracks come back through the new surface?
Some will if the groundwork gets skipped. We rout and fill the wide ones, and anywhere the ground under the mat has gone soft, we dig it out and rebuild rather than pave over it. Wet season rain from November through March finds every weak spot, and an overlay laid on a failed section prints the same cracks back within a year or two.
What changes the price of resurfacing driveway work?
Square footage first, then how much repair has to happen before a single load of asphalt gets tipped. Access matters too: a paver that can't reach the back means hand work and more hours. Edge details, cutting down at the garage door, drainage, and whether we're building up a crushed asphalt driveway rather than overlaying an existing one all move the asphalt overlay cost.
Contact Honolulu Paving Co now
Contact asphalt paving contractors now, while your driveway is still rough rather than broken up, because resurfacing only works while the base underneath still holds. I come out, walk it with you, take rough measurements and say plainly whether a fresh mat will last or whether you are past that point.
Size moves the number most, then how far the alligator cracking has spread, then access: a straight shot for the truck is one job, and hauling hot mix by hand past a narrow gate up in Manoa is another. Some asphalt resurfacing contractors will quote yours off a satellite photo. I do not.
If sealing is all it needs, I say so, since sealcoating and resurfacing here are the same phone call. Ring (808) 808-9481, nine to five weekdays, and leave a message if I am on the roller. You get a call back from me.
